Introduction

A master's degree in Turkey is offered on two tracks: with a thesis and without one. A master's with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. A master's without thesis is a coursework-focused graduate program completed with a term project instead of a thesis. The two tracks differ in course load, in length, and in what the degree qualifies you to do next.

Tezli means with thesis. Tezsiz means without thesis. The choice is structural rather than a matter of prestige, and it is defined in the Regulation on Graduate Education and Training, the national rulebook that state and foundation universities in Turkey apply.

The figures come from the European Commission's Eurydice country description of Türkiye and from statistics published by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) on 27 March 2026. Admission conditions and application calendars change between academic years, so confirm every university-level detail at source.

What do tezli and tezsiz actually mean?

Tezli is the Turkish word for a master's with thesis, and tezsiz is the Turkish word for a master's without thesis. A master's with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. A master's without thesis is a coursework-focused graduate program completed with a term project instead of a thesis. Both are master's degrees awarded by a Turkish university.

The two words appear on program lists, application guides and diplomas, and they are often left untranslated on the English-language pages of Turkish universities. An international applicant reading "Tezsiz Yüksek Lisans (İngilizce)" is looking at a non-thesis master's taught in English.

Both tracks are run by a graduate school. A graduate school is the academic unit within a Turkish university that runs graduate education and manages application and enrolment procedures. The graduate school, rather than the faculty, is usually the office that publishes the application calendar, receives documents and confirms registration for a master's with thesis and a master's without thesis alike.

The distinction is set at national level. Eurydice, the European Commission's education information network, states in its Türkiye country description last updated 19 May 2025 that under the Regulation on Graduate Education and Training the master's program is carried out in two ways, thesis and non-thesis. Individual universities build their own rules on top of that frame, which is why two universities can run the same non-thesis subject with different course lists.

Neither track is a shortened version of the other. One produces a supervised piece of original research; the other produces a professional qualification built almost entirely from coursework.

How are the two master's tracks built?

A master's with thesis in Turkey is built from at least seven courses, a seminar course and thesis study, totaling not less than twenty-one credits. A master's without thesis is built from at least ten courses and a term project course, totaling 30 credits and not less than 60 ECTS. The extra courses in the non-thesis track stand in place of the research component.

Those minimums come from the Regulation on Graduate Education and Training as described by Eurydice, last updated 19 May 2025. Universities may set higher requirements, so these are floors rather than typical loads.

A term project is the supervised written study that a student in a master's without thesis completes in place of a thesis. It is assessed within the program rather than defended before a jury.

Read across Table 1 and the design intent is visible: the thesis track spends part of its credit budget on supervised research, while the non-thesis track spends all of it on taught content.

How much coursework does each track require?

The non-thesis track carries the heavier taught load. Eurydice's Türkiye country description, last updated 19 May 2025, sets the non-thesis minimum at ten courses and 60 ECTS, against seven courses and twenty-one credits for the thesis track. A student choosing the non-thesis route should expect more classroom contact, more assessed coursework, and no thesis defense.

The non-thesis master's program consists of a total of 30 credits and not less than 60 ECTS, at least ten courses and a term project course.
— European Commission, Eurydice, Türkiye country description, last updated 19 May 2025

The thesis track distributes effort differently. Alongside the seven-course minimum sit a seminar course and the thesis study itself, and the thesis normally occupies the second half of the program. Total contact hours may look lighter on paper, but supervised research adds reading, data work and writing that no course timetable records.

One further element can extend either track. A scientific preparatory program is a set of completion courses that a student admitted to a graduate program from a different field must complete before beginning the main program. An economics graduate entering a data science program may be asked to take these courses first. Eurydice's description states that the durations of both master's tracks are counted excluding time spent in scientific preparation.

Course lists are set by each university's senate rather than nationally. Two non-thesis programs with the same name at two universities can differ in course titles, in the balance between compulsory and elective courses, and in how the term project is supervised.

How long does each track take?

A master's with thesis in Turkey runs four semesters as standard and is completed in a maximum of six semesters. A master's without thesis is completed in at least two semesters and at most three. Both figures exclude time spent in scientific preparation, according to the Eurydice country description of Türkiye last updated 19 May 2025.

The maximum period of study is the longest duration set out in regulation within which a graduate program must be completed before the right to enrolment ends. For an international student planning a stay in Turkey, that ceiling often matters more than the standard length, because study duration sits underneath other arrangements such as residence and registration status.

A thesis-track sequence generally runs like this:

  1. Semester one — coursework and, where the program requires it, the seminar course.

  2. Semester two — remaining coursework and the appointment of a thesis supervisor.

  3. Semester three — thesis work under supervision, with progress reviewed by the graduate school.

  4. Semester four — completion, submission and defense of the thesis.

  5. Semesters five and six — the regulatory margin available if the thesis is not finished on schedule.

The non-thesis sequence is shorter and flatter: coursework across two semesters, the term project taken in the semester the program allows, and a third semester as the regulatory margin. That compression is the most practical difference for applicants who plan to work, to return home on a fixed date, or to move on to a professional qualification.

As of August 2026, applicants are best served by reading the academic calendar of the specific graduate school rather than assuming a national schedule.

How do entry and exit conditions differ?

Entry and exit conditions are where the two tracks separate most sharply. ALES is generally expected for applications to a master's with thesis, while Eurydice's Türkiye country description, last updated 19 May 2025, states that an ALES score may not be a prerequisite for applications to non-thesis master's programs, with any base score determined by university senates.

ALES is the centralised examination administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) and used in applications to graduate programs and in academic staff recruitment in Turkey. Whether an international applicant is asked for it is decided by the university.

Which track suits which applicant?

The thesis track suits applicants whose next step depends on research: a doctoral program, an academic post, or a role where a supervised study is evidence of capability. The non-thesis track suits applicants who need a taught qualification inside a short, fixed window. Neither is a lesser degree, and the answer depends on what happens after graduation rather than on the label on the program page.

Signals that point toward a master's with thesis:

  • A doctoral program in Turkey is part of the plan, in the same field or a related one.

  • The subject involves laboratory, field or archival work that only supervised research provides.

  • An archived research study would strengthen an application elsewhere.

  • Four to six semesters fit the applicant's timeline and registration plans.

  • A supervisor relationship is wanted for reference letters and research training.

Signals that point toward a master's without thesis: a fixed two-to-three semester window, a professional rather than academic goal, an employer expecting a taught qualification, or a subject where breadth across ten or more courses is worth more than depth in one question.

Scale is worth keeping in view. The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) reported on 27 March 2026 that 330,464 students were enrolled in master's programs in Turkey in 2025–2026 and 89,665 in doctoral programs, across 208 higher education institutions. The same bulletin recorded 152,471 new master's registrations for that academic year. Both tracks sit inside those totals. The non-thesis route is a full qualification in its own right, and the thesis route is the one that carries research training.

Can a non-thesis master's lead to a doctorate?

This is the point international applicants most often misread. Eurydice's Türkiye third-cycle description, last updated 19 May 2025, sets out doctoral admission as resting on a master's degree with thesis, or on a bachelor's degree under the direct-entry route. A master's without thesis is not the route described for doctoral admission in Turkey, so applicants planning a doctorate treat this as a decision made at master's application stage.

Routes into a doctoral program in Turkey

Eurydice's Türkiye third-cycle description, last updated 19 May 2025, records two entry routes. The standard route, for holders of a master's degree with thesis, runs eight semesters with a maximum of twelve. The direct route, for holders of a bachelor's degree, runs ten semesters with a maximum of fourteen, at 42 credits and 300 ECTS against 21 credits and 240 ECTS.

An integrated doctorate is a route allowing admission directly into a doctoral program with a bachelor's degree, without a master's degree. An applicant holding a non-thesis master's may examine the integrated doctorate route alongside a separate application to a master's with thesis.

Two elements shape the doctoral stage. A qualifying examination is the assessment of a doctoral student's subject knowledge and research capability after the coursework stage, and is the condition for proceeding to the thesis stage. A Thesis Monitoring Committee is the committee that periodically evaluates and tracks the progress of a doctoral thesis.

Tezsiz is often misread as meaning unofficial, unrecognized or partial. A master's without thesis is a full master's degree defined in the same national regulation as the thesis track, and it is awarded by the same graduate school. What differs is the final academic output and what the degree opens next.

Recognition outside Turkey is a separate question. How a Turkish master's degree is treated in another country depends on that country's own procedures rather than the Turkish track name, so ask the receiving authority how each track is assessed. Degrees earned abroad involve the separate recognition procedures of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), applied alongside each graduate school's admission conditions.

What should you do next?

Start from the destination rather than the application form. If a doctoral program in Turkey is part of the plan, the master's with thesis is the route described for doctoral admission by Eurydice's Türkiye third-cycle description of 19 May 2025. If the goal is a taught qualification inside two or three semesters, the master's without thesis is built for that.

An international student is a person who is not a citizen of the Republic of Turkey and who is admitted to a higher education institution under international student status. International student status carries administrative steps beyond the academic ones, set out in separate rules.

  • Write down what the degree must open for you: doctoral study, a professional role, or both.

  • Check whether the program is offered as tezli, tezsiz, or both at that university.

  • Confirm the language of instruction and the language documents the graduate school accepts.

  • Ask the graduate school whether ALES or an alternative is requested for that program.

  • Ask whether a scientific preparatory program applies to your undergraduate field.

  • Confirm the maximum period of study stated in the university's own regulation.

  • Confirm residence and registration requirements with the Presidency of Migration Management.

  • Check whether your diploma needs a Certificate of Recognition before application.

Application calendars, program lists and quotas are set for each academic year. As of August 2026, the reliable sequence is to read the graduate school's own application guide for your term, then confirm anything unclear in writing.

Real-World Examples

The examples in this section are illustrative scenarios created to explain situations applicants may encounter.

Amina — a non-thesis master's and a doctoral plan

Amina completed a coursework master's abroad and applies to a doctoral program at a Turkish university. The graduate school asks whether her degree included a thesis. Because the doctoral route described in the national regulation rests on a master's with thesis, she asks two questions in writing: how her degree is assessed under the recognition procedure, and whether a master's with thesis in Turkey would be the cleaner path. She keeps both answers on file and applies to a thesis-track program for the following academic year.

Daniel — a fixed two-year window

Daniel moves to Turkey for a two-year assignment and wants a master's that finishes inside it. He compares a thesis program at four to six semesters with a non-thesis program at two to three, and chooses the non-thesis track. Before applying he confirms with the graduate school how the term project is supervised and what the university's own maximum period of study is. He also asks whether the program is taught in English, since the Turkish program name did not say.

Ngozi — changing direction mid-program

Ngozi enrolls in a non-thesis program and, two courses in, finds a research question she wants to pursue properly. She learns that students continuing a non-thesis master's may transfer to the thesis track where the receiving institution's minimum requirements are met. She contacts the graduate school and asks which of her completed courses would count toward the thesis track, which additional requirements apply, what the deadline for such a request is, and whether a supervisor in her subject is available. She keeps the written reply on file.

Karim — a thesis that is not accepted

Karim submits his thesis and the jury does not accept it. The national regulation, as described by Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025, allows a student in that position to request a non-thesis master's diploma where the course credit load, project writing and similar requirements of the non-thesis program have been met. Karim asks the graduate school which of those requirements he has already satisfied and which remain, then plans the remaining work with his supervisor within the maximum period of study.

What does tezli yüksek lisans mean in English?+

Tezli yüksek lisans means a master's with thesis. A master's with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 puts it at a minimum of seven courses, a seminar course and thesis study, with not less than twenty-one credits.

What does tezsiz yüksek lisans mean in English?+

Tezsiz yüksek lisans means a master's without thesis. A master's without thesis is a coursework-focused graduate program completed with a term project instead of a thesis. Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 sets it at 30 credits and not less than 60 ECTS, covering at least ten courses and a term project course.

Can I apply for a doctorate in Turkey with a non-thesis master's degree?+

The doctoral admission route described by Eurydice's Türkiye third-cycle description of 19 May 2025 rests on a master's degree with thesis, or on a bachelor's degree under the direct-entry route. A master's without thesis is not the route described for doctoral admission. Applicants generally examine two options: applying to a master's with thesis, or the integrated doctorate route.

how long does a masters degree in turkey take+

A master's with thesis runs four semesters as standard and is completed in a maximum of six. A master's without thesis is completed in at least two semesters and at most three. Both figures come from Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 and exclude time in a scientific preparatory program. Confirm term dates with the graduate school.

Is a non-thesis master's a real master's degree in Turkey?+

Yes. A master's without thesis is defined in the same national regulation as the thesis track and is awarded by the same graduate school of the same university. The difference is structural rather than one of standing: more courses, and a term project in place of thesis study. What differs is the onward route into doctoral study.

can international students switch from a non-thesis to a thesis masters in turkey+

Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 records that students continuing a non-thesis master's program can transfer to the master's program with thesis, provided they fulfill the minimum requirements set by the higher education institution they apply to. Those requirements and deadlines are set by each university, so ask the graduate school first.

What happens if my master's thesis is rejected in Turkey?+

Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 records that a student whose thesis is rejected may, on request, be awarded a non-thesis master's diploma, provided the course credit load, project writing and similar requirements of the non-thesis master's program have been fulfilled. Remaining requirements vary, so ask the graduate school in writing.

Do non-thesis master's programs require ALES?+

Not necessarily. Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 states that an ALES score may not be a prerequisite for applications to non-thesis master's programs, and that where a base score is requested it is determined by university senates. Requirements for international applicants vary between universities, so ask the graduate school.

What is a term project in a non-thesis master's program?+

A term project is the supervised written study that a student in a master's without thesis completes in place of a thesis. Eurydice's Türkiye country description of 19 May 2025 lists it as part of the non-thesis program alongside at least ten courses. Supervision and assessment are set by the university, so ask for the program's project guidelines.

do i need to speak turkish for a masters in turkey+

It depends on the language of instruction. Turkish universities run graduate programs in Turkish and in other languages, including English, and the language requirement follows the program rather than the country. Conditions accepted for admission vary between universities and between programs at the same university. Ask the graduate school which certificates it accepts.
