Turkiye Burslari interview questions follow a fixed five-part format published by Türkiye Scholarships: a welcome, a document check, your purpose of application, your academic knowledge and career goals, and a closing where you can ask questions. According to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page, checked in October 2026, the interview usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes and is held face to face by committees of academics and experts.
Türkiye Scholarships is the government scholarship program for international students run by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). Demand is high. YTB reported on 26 February 2026 that the 2026 cycle received nearly 200,000 applications. A year earlier, YTB reported 125,668 applications from 171 countries for 2025. Only shortlisted candidates reach the interview; the official website says candidates on the final list come from more than 100 countries.
This article covers the interview stage from start to finish: who is invited, what happens in the room, what to bring, how to structure answers and what comes after. It draws on the Türkiye Scholarships website, YTB news releases and the official application calendar. YTB does not publish an official question bank, so the sample questions here are preparation prompts built around the published format, not a leaked list. Mezun Kampüsü prepared this guide for applicants to graduate programs in Turkey.
Interview windows, age limits and programs can change between application cycles. Check the official website for the cycle you are applying in.

What is the Turkiye Burslari interview?
The Turkiye Burslari interview is the in-person stage of Türkiye Scholarships at which shortlisted candidates meet a committee of academics and experts. The official Evaluation and Selection Process page, checked in October 2026, describes it as usually lasting 15 to 30 minutes. It follows a desk-based review of the online application and comes before the final assessment by a selection committee.
A Türkiye Scholarships interview committee is the panel of academics and experts that evaluates shortlisted candidates in a face-to-face interview before the final assessment. The committee does not make the final award on its own. It adds a direct impression of the candidate to the written file.
The interview matters because it is the only point where the committee hears you explain your choices. Your transcript shows results. Your letter shows intent. The interview tests whether you can talk about both clearly and connect them to a field of study in Turkey.
YTB has described the interview as part of a large international operation. In its 26 February 2026 announcement, YTB said that, after desk-based reviews, its teams would travel to candidates’ countries for in-person interviews. The Türkiye Scholarships website states that candidates on the final list come from more than 100 countries.
The scholarship covers several study levels. The official Criteria and Scholarship Programs page, checked in October 2026, lists undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs, along with the Success Scholarship, Research Scholarship and joint programs. This article focuses on master’s and PhD applicants. The interview format is the same, but graduate candidates are usually expected to speak in more depth about research interests and career plans.
Two points shape every answer you give. The committee has already read your file, so repeating it word for word adds little. And the committee has limited time, so short, specific answers leave room for follow-up questions. In a 15-minute session, a two-minute answer to an opening question uses more than a tenth of the time available.
Who is invited to the Türkiye Scholarships interview?
Only candidates who pass the earlier document-based stages are invited to the Türkiye Scholarships interview. The official Evaluation and Selection Process page, checked in October 2026, lists five stages in order: preliminary assessment, expert evaluation, tests, interview and final assessment. The expert evaluation sets the interview list, and tests apply mainly to undergraduate applicants in some fields.
Eligibility starts before any of these stages. The Criteria and Scholarship Programs page states that master’s applicants must be under the age of 30 and PhD applicants under the age of 35. Turkish citizens, people who have lost Turkish citizenship, and students already enrolled at a Turkish university at the level they are applying for cannot apply.
The Evaluation and Selection Process page states that applications are judged on academic success, social activities and motivation related to the chosen field. Those three areas reappear in the interview, which is why your written application and your spoken answers should tell the same story.
Table 1. The five evaluation stages of Türkiye Scholarships and what each one decides
Stage | Who or what is assessed | What it decides | Relevance for graduate applicants |
|---|---|---|---|
Preliminary assessment | Online application and documents | Whether the file is complete and eligible | Applies to all applicants |
Expert evaluation | Academic record, documents and statements | Who goes on to the interview list | Applies to all applicants |
Tests | Written test, held on interview day | Results of the test for applicable programs | Mainly undergraduate applicants |
Interview | Face-to-face meeting with a committee of academics and experts | Committee impression of the candidate | Applies to shortlisted applicants |
Final assessment | Overall file, including interview results | General eligibility for the scholarship | Applies to interviewed applicants |

Invitations are sent by Türkiye Scholarships. The official page says candidates learn their test and interview time slot in the invitation. Interviews run in morning and afternoon sessions, so the slot you receive can fall at any point in the day.
Shortlisting depends on the volume of applications. With nearly 200,000 applications reported by YTB for 2026, the interview list is a small share of the total pool. Reaching the interview stage indicates that your file passed the expert evaluation.
What happens in the interview, part by part?
The Türkiye Scholarships interview follows five parts, according to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page checked in October 2026: welcome and entrance, document check, purpose of the application, academic knowledge and career goals, and closing with your questions to the committee. The whole session usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes, so each part is short.
The welcome is brief. Committee members introduce the session, and you may be asked to introduce yourself. A 60-second introduction works well: your name, your country, your most recent degree, and the program you hope to study in Turkey.
The document check comes next. The committee compares the originals you bring with what you uploaded in the Türkiye Scholarships Application System. Mismatches cost time and raise doubts, so keep your folder in the same order as your online file.
The purpose of the application is where motivation questions sit. The official criteria explain what the committee is looking for:
Applications for Türkiye Scholarships are considered according to the candidate’s academic success, social activities and motivation related to the chosen field.
— Türkiye Scholarships, Evaluation and Selection Process page, accessed October 2026
The official criteria sentence is the most useful guide to your answers. Each of the three areas maps to a question you can prepare. Academic success maps to your grades, thesis or projects. Social activities map to volunteering, student societies and community work. Motivation maps to why this field, why Turkey, and why the programs you chose.
The academic knowledge and career goals part is the longest for most graduate applicants. Expect questions about your undergraduate or master’s thesis, the methods you used, and what you want to research next. PhD candidates should be ready to summarize a research idea in two or three sentences.
The closing is your chance to ask a question. One relevant question is enough. Asking about research opportunities in your field shows interest. Asking about matters already covered on the official website suggests weak preparation.
Across all five parts, the committee is building a single picture. Consistency between parts counts as much as any single answer.
Track Your Academic Process in One Account
Log InWhich documents should you bring to the interview?
Candidates invited to the Türkiye Scholarships interview must bring all documents and certificates of the most recent education they have completed, according to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page checked in October 2026. The committee checks these originals against the online application during the second of the five interview parts, so the folder should mirror the uploaded file.
The online application itself sets out what the file contains. The archived How To Apply page of the Türkiye Scholarships website lists a national ID or passport, a recent photo, a diploma or temporary graduation certificate, certified transcripts, international exam scores such as GRE, GMAT, DELF or YDS where a program requires them, and language test scores where required. The same page lists a research proposal and an example of written work for PhD applicants. That page is undated, so confirm the document list for your cycle in the Türkiye Scholarships Application System.
Bring originals and one set of copies. Transcripts should be certified; the archived How To Apply page states that online screenshots and uncertified transcripts are not accepted at the application stage.
Use this list in the days before the interview:
Print the interview invitation and note the date, time slot and address.
Gather your passport or national ID and the photo used in the application.
Collect the original diploma or temporary graduation certificate.
Add certified transcripts for your most recent completed degree.
Include language and international exam score reports listed in your application.
Add your research proposal and writing sample if you applied for a PhD.
Arrange all documents in the same order as your online application.
Reread your statement of purpose and the program choices you submitted.
A well-organized folder saves minutes in a session that usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. It also signals care before you answer a single question.
Certificates of achievement, publications, conference papers and volunteer records support the social activities criterion. Bring them only if they appear in, or directly support, your online application. A committee cannot review a thick folder of new material within the time available.
How should you answer academic and career questions?
Strong answers to Turkiye Burslari interview questions are short, specific and linked to the three official criteria: academic success, social activities and motivation related to the chosen field. Open with a one-sentence direct answer, add one concrete example from your record, and close with how it connects to your planned program in Turkey. Aim for 45 to 90 seconds per answer in a 15 to 30 minute session.
YTB does not publish a list of interview questions. The prompts below are preparation questions built around the official five-part format described on the Türkiye Scholarships website in October 2026. They are not reported questions from past interviews.
Table 2. Preparation prompts by interview part, with an answer approach for each
Interview part | Preparation prompt | What the answer can show | Answer approach |
|---|---|---|---|
Welcome and entrance | Tell us about yourself. | Clarity and confidence | Name, country, last degree, intended program; under one minute |
Purpose of the application | Why did you apply for Türkiye Scholarships? | Motivation related to the field | One academic reason, one personal reason, one link to Turkey |
Purpose of the application | Why this field and these universities? | Research into programs | Name a research area or course that matches your background |
Academic knowledge | Explain your thesis or final project. | Academic success | Question, method, result, what you learned; avoid jargon |
Academic knowledge | What would you research in a PhD? | Research readiness | Problem, gap, possible method, expected contribution |
Career goals | Where do you see yourself after graduation? | Career planning | A realistic role and how it serves your field or country |
Social activities | What have you done outside your studies? | Social activities criterion | One activity, your role, a measurable outcome |
Closing | Do you have any questions for us? | Engagement | One question about research or academic life in Turkey |

Master’s applicants should be ready to link their undergraduate work to a planned specialization. A master’s with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. If you chose a thesis program, be ready to name a possible topic.
PhD applicants carry an extra document in many cycles: the research proposal listed on the archived How To Apply page. Know your proposal well enough to explain it without notes, and be ready for questions about feasibility and methods.
If you do not know an answer, say so briefly and explain how you would find out.
When are Türkiye Scholarships interviews held?
For the general application, Türkiye Scholarships interviews run from April to June, and results are announced in early August, according to the official Application Calendar checked in October 2026. The 2026 general application period ran from 10 January to 20 February 2026, as YTB announced on 15 January 2026, so candidates typically wait several weeks between the deadline and an invitation.
The calendar differs by program. Graduate applicants should know which one they applied to, because the interview timing depends on it.
General application: applications in January and February, interviews from April to June, results in early August.
Success Scholarship: applications from October to November, with evaluation and results in November; the calendar lists no separate interview window.
Research Scholarship: four application periods each year, from January–March to October–December, each with its own results month.
Joint programs: run with partner institutions listed on the Criteria and Scholarship Programs page, on their own announced schedules.
Source: Türkiye Scholarships Application Calendar and announcements, accessed October 2026.
The interview and the test take place on the same day for candidates who sit a test, in morning and afternoon sessions, according to the Evaluation and Selection Process page. Graduate applicants who do not take a test still receive a time slot in their invitation.
YTB described the scale of the in-person round in its 26 February 2026 announcement. YTB President Abdulhadi Turus said: “Following these desk-based reviews, we will go to the candidates’ respective countries and conduct face-to-face interviews with them in person.” For the 2026 cycle, this meant interviews were organized in candidates’ countries; confirm the location for your own cycle in the invitation.
Timing also affects preparation. With interviews possible at any point between April and June, start preparing as soon as applications close rather than waiting for an invitation. In the 2026 cycle, the gap between the 20 February deadline and the start of the April interview window was about six weeks (derived from the two published dates).
Calendars can shift between cycles. Check the official Application Calendar for the cycle you applied in, and watch your email and the application system for the invitation.

Does a good interview mean you have won the scholarship?
A good interview does not by itself mean you have won Türkiye Scholarships. According to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page, checked in October 2026, the interview is followed by a final assessment, in which a selection committee evaluates the candidate’s general eligibility for the scholarship. The final decision combines the interview with the rest of the file.
Many applicants read the tone of the interview as a signal. A friendly committee or a long conversation can feel like good news, and a short session can feel like bad news. Neither is a reliable indicator, because the committee does not announce decisions in the room.
A second common confusion concerns language. The official Evaluation and Selection Process page does not state a single language for the interview. It notes that some test questions require Turkish and English, and that candidates in health, science and engineering fields are expected to read English well. Preparing in English is a sensible default; the invitation is the place to check for any instruction on language.
TÖMER is the common name for the Turkish language teaching centres attached to Turkish universities, which provide Turkish courses and issue certificates of Turkish proficiency. Scholarship holders placed in Turkish-medium programs may be directed to Turkish language study after selection. Arrangements depend on the program’s language of instruction and the placement, so check the placement letter rather than assuming a fixed course length.
How to show Turkish you have started learning
If you have taken Turkish classes, the closing or the motivation part of the interview are natural places to mention it. A short, simple sentence in Turkish is enough to show effort. Do not claim a level you cannot demonstrate, because the committee may switch languages for a moment. Mention any certificate only if it is listed in your online application and you have brought the original to the document check.
A third confusion concerns placement. Türkiye Scholarships handles both the scholarship and university placement. Your program choices in the application matter, and the committee may ask why you chose them. The Criteria and Scholarship Programs page describes placement in a university and program as one of the scholarship’s benefits.
Results for the general application are announced in early August, according to the official Application Calendar. Until then, keep your email address and application system login active. Graduates of the program form a large network: at the 18 June 2026 graduation ceremony in Ankara, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said the Türkiye Alumni family exceeds 150,000.
How should you prepare in the weeks before the interview?
Preparation for the Türkiye Scholarships interview works best as a short, structured plan: review your file, practice answers to prompts for each of the five interview parts, organize your documents and plan your travel to the interview location. The official interview usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes, according to the Türkiye Scholarships Evaluation and Selection Process page checked in October 2026, so rehearse concise answers rather than long speeches.
Start with your own application. Reread the statement of purpose, your program choices and any research proposal. The committee will use these as its starting point, and your answers should match what you wrote.
Next, prepare evidence for each of the three official criteria. For academic success, choose one project or thesis you can explain in two minutes. For social activities, choose one role with a clear outcome. For motivation, write one paragraph on why your field, why Turkey and why your chosen programs.
Practice aloud. A mock interview with a professor, a former scholarship holder or a friend helps you hear where answers run long. Time each answer, and aim for under 90 seconds.
Research the programs you chose. Read the program pages of the universities in your application, including course lists and research areas. Being able to name a course or a research group shows real interest.
Plan the day itself. Check the address in your invitation, allow extra travel time, and dress in a way that suits a formal academic meeting. Bring your document folder and a printed copy of your application.
Finally, check the official sources for updates. Calendars, age limits and program lists can change between cycles. The official website and YTB announcements are the reference points for the cycle you are in. As YTB reported a record of nearly 200,000 applications for 2026, careful preparation is the part of the process you control most directly.

Real-World Examples
The examples in this section are illustrative scenarios created to explain situations applicants may encounter.
Amina, master’s applicant in public health. Amina reached the interview stage and prepared a long answer about her whole academic history. In a mock session with a lecturer, her introduction ran past three minutes. She cut it to four sentences: her country, her degree, her final-year project on community clinics and the master’s program she hoped to join. With the time saved, she prepared a short story about volunteering at a vaccination campaign, which gave her clear evidence for the social activities criterion. On interview day she had time left to ask the committee about research opportunities in her field.
Daniel, PhD applicant in civil engineering. Daniel submitted a research proposal but had not reread it in three months. Two weeks before his interview, he summarized the proposal in three sentences: the problem, the gap and his planned method. He also prepared a short answer on what he would change if a supervisor suggested a different direction. When the committee asked about feasibility, he explained his plan without notes and described how he would adjust the scope. He left the interview confident that his answers matched his written file.
Leila, master’s applicant switching fields. Leila studied economics but applied for master’s programs in urban planning. She expected a question about the change and prepared a direct answer: a summer internship in a city office showed her how data shapes planning decisions. She linked that experience to two courses listed on the program pages of the universities she chose. During the purpose-of-application part, the committee asked exactly why she was changing fields, and her answer connected her background to her new direction clearly.
Omar, applicant with a document gap. While preparing his folder, Omar noticed that his certified transcript for the final semester had not arrived. He contacted his university registrar three weeks before the interview and requested an official certified copy. He also brought his temporary graduation certificate and the confirmation email from the registrar. At the document check, he explained the situation briefly and showed the paperwork he had. He then moved on to the academic questions, focused on his thesis rather than on the missing page.

What questions are asked in the Turkiye Burslari interview?+
YTB does not publish an official question list. The interview follows five parts described on the Türkiye Scholarships website in October 2026: welcome and entrance, document check, purpose of the application, academic knowledge and career goals, and closing with your questions. Prepare an introduction, a clear reason for applying, a short explanation of your thesis or projects, your career plans, and one question for the committee. Questions vary by candidate and committee.
How long is the Türkiye Scholarships interview?+
The interview usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes, according to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page checked in October 2026. Within that time the committee covers five parts, from the welcome to the closing. Because the time is short, answers of 45 to 90 seconds leave room for follow-up questions. The exact length can vary between candidates and committees, so a shorter or longer session does not by itself indicate an outcome.
Is the Turkiye Burslari interview online or in person?+
The official Evaluation and Selection Process page, checked in October 2026, describes the interviews as face to face. YTB President Abdulhadi Turus said on 26 February 2026 that YTB teams would go to candidates’ countries to hold in-person interviews. Arrangements can differ between cycles and programs, so follow the instructions in your interview invitation for the location, date and time slot.
What language is the Türkiye Scholarships interview in?+
The official Evaluation and Selection Process page does not specify a single interview language, as of October 2026. The page notes that some test questions require Turkish and English, and that candidates in health, science and engineering are expected to read English well. Preparing to answer in English is a sensible default. If you have studied Turkish, being ready to say a few sentences in Turkish can support your motivation answer.
What documents do I need to bring to the interview?+
You need to bring all documents and certificates of the most recent education you have completed, according to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page checked in October 2026. In practice, this means your passport or ID, original diploma or temporary graduation certificate, certified transcripts, and the exam and language score reports in your application. PhD applicants can also bring a copy of their research proposal. Check your invitation for any additional items.
Can I do the Turkiye Burslari interview without a research proposal?+
Master’s applicants usually do not need a research proposal; the archived How To Apply page of the Türkiye Scholarships website lists a research proposal and a writing sample for PhD applicants only. Master’s applicants should still be ready to describe a possible thesis topic if they chose a thesis program. Requirements can change between cycles, so confirm the document list in the Türkiye Scholarships Application System.
When are the interviews for Türkiye Scholarships held?+
For the general application, interviews run from April to June and results are announced in early August, according to the official Application Calendar checked in October 2026. The 2026 application period ran from 10 January to 20 February 2026. The Research Scholarship and Success Scholarship follow different calendars. Check the calendar for your program and cycle, because dates can shift from year to year.
Does passing the interview mean I got the scholarship?+
Passing the interview does not by itself confirm an award. According to the official Evaluation and Selection Process page, a selection committee carries out a final assessment of each candidate’s general eligibility after the interview. Results for the general application are announced in early August, according to the official Application Calendar checked in October 2026. Keep your application system login and email active until results are published.
How do I answer “why do you want to study in Turkey” in the scholarship interview?+
Give one academic reason, one personal reason and one link to Turkey. An academic reason could be a research area or course offered in your chosen program. A personal reason could be a language interest or a regional connection. The link to Turkey should be specific, such as a university’s work in your field. Keep the answer under 90 seconds and make sure it matches the statement of purpose in your application.
What is the age limit for a Türkiye Scholarships master’s or PhD?+
Master’s applicants must be under the age of 30 and PhD applicants under the age of 35, according to the official Criteria and Scholarship Programs page checked in October 2026. The Research Scholarship has a separate limit of under 50. Turkish citizens, people who have lost Turkish citizenship and students already enrolled at a Turkish university at the same level cannot apply. Age limits can change between cycles, so check the criteria page for your cycle.
How many people apply for Türkiye Scholarships?+
YTB reported nearly 200,000 applications for the 2026 cycle in its 26 February 2026 announcement, describing it as a record. For the 2025 cycle, YTB reported 125,668 applications from 171 countries. In 2023, YTB reported 117,367 applications from 162 countries. Only candidates who pass the document-based stages reach the interview, so the interview list is a small share of all applicants.
