Introduction

International students can study for a master’s in clinical psychology in Turkey at a number of state and foundation universities, usually after completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Most programs run for two years, include supervised clinical training and end with a thesis. Admission is managed by each university’s graduate school through written exams, interviews and document review, and requirements vary between universities and academic years.

Interest in Turkey as a study destination has grown steadily. According to YÖK’s Internationalization Strategy Document for Higher Education 2024–2028, Turkey hosted 336,366 international students in 2024, up from 72,178 in 2015. The same document places Turkey 8th in the world by number of international students, based on 2023 data. Graduate study is a smaller but distinct part of that picture: 31,438 international students were enrolled in master’s programs in 2024.

This guide covers eligibility, program structure, language, application steps and professional recognition. It draws on YÖK statistics and decisions, the Eurydice summary of Turkish graduate regulation, and program pages from Koç University, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul Bilgi University, Yeditepe University and Acıbadem University. Calendars, quotas and criteria change each semester, so details should be confirmed on each university’s announcement.

What is a clinical psychology master’s in Turkey?

A clinical psychology master’s in Turkey is a second-cycle graduate program that trains psychology graduates in psychological assessment, psychotherapy and clinical research. It is run by a university graduate school, usually lasts two years, and combines coursework with supervised practice. Most programs are thesis-based. Graduates can continue to a doctoral program or move toward work in hospitals, clinics and counseling centers.

A graduate school is the academic unit within a Turkish university that runs graduate education and manages application and enrolment procedures. In Turkey, clinical psychology is often housed in a graduate school of social sciences, while the teaching staff belong to the university’s psychology department. Admission decisions, enrollment and thesis rules all pass through the graduate school.

Turkish regulation recognizes two master’s formats. A master’s with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. A master’s without thesis is a coursework-focused graduate program completed with a term project instead of a thesis. Clinical psychology programs exist in both formats. Istanbul Bilgi University, for example, lists a clinical psychology master’s with thesis in the Turkish Qualifications Framework portal, while İstinye University publishes a clinical psychology master’s without thesis in its course catalog.

The Turkish Qualifications Framework record for the Istanbul Bilgi University program describes the kind of competences these degrees aim to build:

  • clinical interviewing and psychotherapy practice

  • cognitive and personality assessment with written reports

  • case formulation and treatment planning

  • a year-long supervised clinical practicum

  • an original master’s thesis

Program content differs between universities, so each program’s official course plan is the most reliable guide to what a specific degree, sometimes searched as a “masters in clinical psychology” or “clinical psych MA”, includes.

Who can apply as an international student?

International students with a bachelor’s degree in psychology are the main applicant group for clinical psychology master’s programs in Turkey. An international student is a person who is not a citizen of the Republic of Turkey and who is admitted to a higher education institution under international student status. Each university sets its own entry criteria, so accepted bachelor’s fields, entrance tests and language proofs vary from program to program.

Published program pages show how much eligibility can differ. Koç University states that applicants need a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Acıbadem University accepts graduates of a four-year psychology bachelor’s program and asks that foreign diplomas have their equivalence approved. Yeditepe University accepts a four-year psychology or psychological counseling and guidance bachelor’s degree for its 2026–2027 fall intake. The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology states that it has no fixed policy on applicants from other fields.

ALES is the centralised examination administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) and used in applications to graduate programs and in academic staff recruitment in Turkey. Some programs accept the GRE in place of ALES. A Certificate of Equivalence is the Council of Higher Education’s formal determination of which Turkish qualification, in which field and at which level, a diploma obtained abroad corresponds to. Universities differ on whether it is needed at application or at enrollment.

How the one-year preparation route works for other fields

The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology explains in its graduate FAQ that applicants from other fields, if accepted, complete a one-year scientific preparation program in psychology before the main program. Not every university offers this route for clinical psychology, and some accept psychology graduates only, so applicants from related fields should check the program announcement first.

What does the graduate program include?

A clinical psychology master’s program in Turkey generally includes three parts: graduate coursework in assessment and psychotherapy, supervised clinical practice with real clients, and a thesis or term project. Under the national graduate regulation, a master’s with thesis includes at least seven courses, a seminar course and thesis work. Universities add clinical training on top of that legal minimum, and its length and setting vary by program.

The European Commission’s Eurydice network, in its summary of Turkey’s second-cycle programs updated on 19 May 2025, sets out the legal frame. A master’s with thesis must total no fewer than twenty-one credits, lasts four semesters excluding any scientific preparation, and must be completed within six semesters. Those rules come from the Regulation on Graduate Education and Training, published in the Official Gazette on 20 April 2016.

Clinical training is where programs differ most. Koç University states that second-year students complete their internship at Koç University Hospital and partner mental health facilities. The Istanbul Bilgi University record in the Turkish Qualifications Framework portal describes a year-long supervised clinical practicum. A supervised clinical practicum is the part of a clinical psychology graduate program in which students assess or treat clients in a hospital, clinic or university center while a qualified supervisor reviews their work.

The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology puts the weight on that training in its graduate FAQ:

What makes a clinical master’s program good is the quality of the internships and supervision offered by that program.
— Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology, Graduate FAQ, accessed October 2026

For international students, the practicum is also where language becomes practical. Clinical placements in Turkey generally involve Turkish-speaking clients, so a program taught in English may still schedule supervision and internships in Turkish. Koç University states this directly: most courses are taught in English, with the exception of supervision and internships.

The thesis completes the program, usually through a defense before a jury. Supervision hours are not published on most program pages, so applicants should ask each graduate school for practicum details in writing.

How do you apply, step by step?

Applying for a clinical psychology master’s in Turkey usually follows the same sequence at most universities: check eligibility, prepare documents and test scores, submit an online application to the graduate school, sit a written scientific assessment, attend an interview, and enroll after admission. International applicants may apply through a separate international student quota where a university offers one, and the timing of each stage is set by the university.

A scientific assessment is a written or oral evaluation of subject knowledge administered by a university as part of its graduate admissions; it is not a centralised examination and its scope varies by program. In clinical psychology, the written stage usually tests knowledge of psychopathology, assessment and research methods. Koç University describes a mock exam for all eligible applicants and a written exam for shortlisted applicants.

A typical application runs in this order:

  1. Shortlist programs. Compare the language of instruction, the thesis or non-thesis track and the clinical training setting.

  2. Read the current announcement. Graduate schools publish criteria for each semester; Yeditepe University, for example, set 4 August 2026 as its deadline for the 2026–2027 fall intake.

  3. Prepare test results. Gather ALES or GRE scores, English proficiency results and, where requested, a Turkish proficiency certificate.

  4. Prepare documents. Transcripts, diploma, recommendation letters, CV and a statement of purpose are the usual core set; Koç University asks for two recommendation letters.

  5. Submit the online application. Most universities use their own application portal.

  6. Sit the written exam. Shortlists are posted on the graduate school or department website.

  7. Attend the interview. Boğaziçi University published clinical psychology MA oral exam invitations on 24 June 2026.

  8. Enroll and start residence procedures. Admitted students complete enrollment and then apply for a student residence permit.

A student residence permit is the residence permit granted to a foreign national studying in Turkey, allowing them to remain in the country for the duration of their studies. Residence rules belong to a separate legal process with its own deadlines, so applicants should follow the Presidency of Migration Management’s official guidance after admission.

Most programs admit students once a year for the fall semester; Acıbadem University also listed a second application period for its 2026–2027 fall intake.

Thesis or non-thesis: how do the tracks differ?

The main difference between a clinical psychology master’s with thesis and one without thesis in Turkey is the final requirement and the length. The thesis track adds a research thesis and takes four semesters; the non-thesis track ends with a term project and lasts two to three semesters. The thesis track is also the usual route toward a doctoral program in clinical psychology.

The Regulation on Graduate Education and Training sets the frame for both formats. According to Eurydice’s summary updated on 19 May 2025, a non-thesis master’s consists of at least ten courses and a term project course, totals no fewer than 30 credits and 60 ECTS, and is completed in at least two and at most three semesters. Eurydice also notes that an ALES score may not be a prerequisite for non-thesis applications, while universities may still set their own threshold.

Clinical psychology programs often go beyond these minimums. The Istanbul Bilgi University program requires 120 ECTS, and universities attach a supervised practicum that the regulation itself does not specify.

A thesis track gives research experience that doctoral admissions committees tend to value. A non-thesis track is shorter, but its clinical training and diploma wording should be checked with the university before applying, since YÖK’s February 2026 registration decision shows that the field named on a diploma can matter.

Which program suits which applicant?

The right clinical psychology master’s in Turkey for an international student depends mostly on three factors: language, clinical training setting and long-term plans. An applicant with strong Turkish fits a wider range of programs, including Turkish-medium ones. An applicant who speaks only English should look for English-taught coursework and ask how supervision and internships are organized, because those parts often run in Turkish.

Language is the first filter. TÖMER is the common name for the Turkish language teaching centres attached to Turkish universities, which provide Turkish courses and issue certificates of Turkish proficiency. Koç University is explicit about its expectation for international applicants:

All international applicants who are non-Turkish Speakers must have a B2 level TÖMER Score.
— Koç University, MA Clinical Psychology (Thesis) program page, accessed October 2026

Clinical setting is the second filter. A program attached to a university hospital, such as the Koç University internship at Koç University Hospital, offers a different caseload from one built around a university counseling center. Yeditepe University runs its thesis-based clinical psychology master’s in English, while Acıbadem University described its program as Turkish-medium with English-language readings.

Long-term plans are the third filter. Applicants who plan a PhD usually benefit from the thesis track. Applicants who plan to practice in their home country should check how that country’s licensing body treats a degree from Turkey. Turkey’s own professional title is a separate matter, covered in the next section.

Questions to ask a graduate school about clinical placements

Ask where students complete their practicum and whether placements are arranged by the program or by the student. Ask in which language supervision sessions run and whether clients are seen in Turkish. Ask how many supervised cases a student typically follows and who the supervisors are. Ask whether the diploma names clinical psychology as the field. Written answers from the graduate school are more reliable than informal advice from forums or agents.

Program size is the last consideration, and published quotas can be small. Acıbadem University’s 2026–2027 second-period quota table, for example, listed two domestic seats. Small cohorts can mean close supervision and strong competition for each place.

Does the degree make you a clinical psychologist?

A clinical psychology master’s degree in Turkey and the professional clinical psychologist title are related but not identical. The title is regulated by Additional Article 13 of Law No. 1219, and YÖK registers which graduate diplomas qualify. Earning the degree is the academic step; holding the title in Turkey depends on that registration and on the rules for professional practice.

YÖK clarified its position in a letter dated 4 March 2026. The letter states that YÖK, at its meeting of 18 February 2026, amended its earlier decision of 18 July 2018 on registering clinical psychology master’s and doctoral graduates. Under the revised decision, graduates of general psychology or applied psychology programs are not all registered as clinical psychologists. Applied psychology graduates who completed clinical psychology training before 18 July 2018, with that subfield shown on the diploma, are registered directly. Diplomas that name only psychology or applied psychology are assessed through individual applications under Additional Article 13 of Law No. 1219.

For an international student, this has two practical consequences. First, the exact program title and the field printed on the diploma matter, so it is worth confirming before enrolling that the program is registered as clinical psychology. Second, the title in Turkey is not the same as a license in another country. A graduate who plans to work abroad needs the recognition rules of that country, which Turkish regulation does not cover.

The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology adds a related view in its graduate FAQ: in the department’s assessment, one-year clinical programs without internship and supervision are not equivalent to programs in Turkey. The same FAQ advises that anyone studying abroad confirm whether the program has equivalence in Turkey.

Rules for foreign nationals practicing psychology in Turkey involve work permits and health profession regulation, which change over time. This guide does not interpret those rules. Applicants who intend to practice professionally in Turkey should seek confirmation from YÖK, the Ministry of Health and a qualified legal adviser.

What should you do next?

The next step for an international student considering a clinical psychology master’s in Turkey is to turn general interest into a short, verified list of programs. That means confirming eligibility, language expectations, clinical training and diploma wording for each program, then matching those findings to your own background and plans. Admission criteria change by semester, so every item should be checked against the current announcement.

Turkey’s graduate system is large. YÖK’s Higher Education Statistics bulletin of 27 March 2026 counts 208 higher education institutions and 84,928 master’s graduates in the 2024–2025 academic year. Within that scale, clinical psychology programs often admit small cohorts, so preparation time matters more than application volume.

  • Confirm that your bachelor’s field is accepted by each program on your list.

  • Check the language of instruction and the language used in supervision and internships.

  • Book an English proficiency test and, if needed, a TÖMER course or exam.

  • Decide between ALES and GRE where both are accepted, and register in time.

  • Ask each graduate school in writing where the practicum takes place.

  • Confirm that the diploma will name clinical psychology as the field.

  • Start the diploma recognition or equivalence process if a program requests it.

  • Note every application, exam and interview date in one calendar.

Seasonal changes deserve particular attention. Most clinical psychology programs open fall applications between late spring and summer, and only some run a second period. Exam formats, accepted tests and quotas also change between academic years, as the different criteria in Acıbadem University’s 2022–2023 and 2026–2027 announcements show. Graduate school pages, YÖK decisions and the Presidency of Migration Management carry the binding information; advice from agents and forums should be checked against them.

Real-World Examples

The examples in this section are illustrative scenarios created to explain situations applicants may encounter.

Amina, psychology graduate with no Turkish. Amina holds a psychology bachelor’s degree and speaks English and French. She finds a clinical psychology master’s with English-taught courses, then reads that supervision and internships run in Turkish and that a TÖMER certificate is expected. Rather than dropping the program, she enrolls in an intensive Turkish course a year before applying and plans her test date around the next fall intake. She also writes to the graduate school to ask which level is accepted and whether the certificate is needed at the application stage or at enrollment.

Daniel, sociology graduate. Daniel studied sociology and wants to move into clinical psychology. One program on his list accepts psychology graduates only. Another states that it has no fixed policy and that accepted applicants from other fields complete a one-year preparation program. Daniel decides to apply to the second program and, in parallel, takes two online psychology courses to strengthen his file. He builds the possible preparation year into his overall timeline and asks the graduate school which foundation courses the preparation year usually includes, so he can start reading in advance.

Leyla, planning a PhD. Leyla wants an academic career and is choosing between a thesis and a non-thesis clinical psychology master’s. The non-thesis track is shorter, but she notes that the thesis track offers research experience and a clearer route into a doctoral program. She compares the research areas of potential thesis supervisors at three universities before applying, and asks each graduate school whether the diploma will name clinical psychology as the field. She then drafts a short research idea for her statement of purpose that fits one supervisor’s work.

Omar, planning to practice at home. Omar plans to return to his home country after graduating. He learns that Turkey’s clinical psychologist title follows its own registration rules and that his home country’s licensing body will set separate conditions. Before enrolling, he contacts that body to ask which course hours, practicum documents and supervision records it will want to see. He then asks his chosen program to confirm that it can issue those documents at graduation, and keeps a personal log of his practicum hours from the first semester onward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can international students study a master’s in clinical psychology in Turkey?+

Yes. International students can apply to clinical psychology master’s programs through each Turkish university’s graduate school. Most programs expect a psychology bachelor’s degree, a written exam and an interview. Some teach in English and others in Turkish, and clinical training often takes place in Turkish. Requirements, quotas and deadlines vary between universities and academic years, so the current announcement should be checked before applying.

Can I do a clinical psychology master’s in Turkey without a psychology degree?+

It depends on the university. Many clinical psychology programs in Turkey accept psychology graduates only. Yeditepe University also accepts graduates of psychological counseling and guidance for its 2026–2027 intake. The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology states that it has no fixed policy for other fields and that accepted applicants complete a one-year scientific preparation program. A scientific preparatory program is a set of completion courses that a student admitted to a graduate program from a different field must complete before beginning the main program.

Do I need Turkish to study clinical psychology in Turkey?+

Often, at least for the clinical part. Even where courses are taught in English, supervision and internships usually involve Turkish-speaking clients. Koç University states that international applicants who do not speak Turkish must hold a B2 level TÖMER result. A Certificate of Turkish Proficiency is the document showing an applicant’s level of Turkish and required for admission to Turkish-medium programs; the accepted level varies between universities. Each program’s announcement states the expected level.

Is ALES required for international applicants?+

Not always. ALES is used for graduate admissions across Turkey, but several clinical psychology programs accept the GRE as an alternative, and Yeditepe University also lists the GMAT. Eurydice’s summary of Turkish regulation, updated on 19 May 2025, notes that ALES may not be a prerequisite for non-thesis master’s programs. Minimum scores and accepted tests are set by each university and can change by semester.

How long is a clinical psychology master’s in Turkey?+

A clinical psychology master’s with thesis in Turkey usually takes four semesters, or two years, and must be completed within six semesters under the national graduate regulation, as summarized by Eurydice on 19 May 2025. A master’s without thesis takes at least two and at most three semesters. Time spent in a scientific preparation program is not counted in these limits, so applicants from other fields may need longer overall.

Are there English-taught clinical psychology master’s programs in Turkey?+

Yes, some programs teach in English. As of October 2026, Yeditepe University describes its thesis-based clinical psychology master’s as English-taught, and Koç University teaches most courses in English, except supervision and internships. Other universities, such as Acıbadem University, have described their programs as Turkish-medium. The language of instruction can differ between coursework and clinical training, so it is worth asking about both.

What is the difference between thesis and non-thesis clinical psychology programs?+

A thesis program adds a research thesis and a defense, needs at least seven courses and a seminar, and takes four semesters. A non-thesis program needs at least ten courses and a term project and takes two to three semesters. The thesis track is the usual route to a PhD. Clinical training and diploma wording differ between universities, so both should be checked for either track before enrolling.

Will my master’s degree make me a clinical psychologist in Turkey?+

Not automatically. In Turkey, the clinical psychologist title is regulated under Additional Article 13 of Law No. 1219, and YÖK decides which diplomas are registered. YÖK’s letter of 4 March 2026 describes its amended registration decision of 18 February 2026. Practicing professionally as a foreign national involves further rules, so applicants should seek confirmation from YÖK and other relevant authorities.

When do clinical psychology master’s applications open in Turkey?+

Most programs admit students for the fall semester, with applications usually announced between late spring and summer. Yeditepe University set 4 August 2026 as its 2026–2027 fall deadline, and Boğaziçi University invited clinical psychology candidates to oral exams on 24 June 2026. Some universities run a second period, as Acıbadem University did for 2026–2027. Dates change every academic year and should be confirmed on the graduate school’s site.

Do I need diploma equivalence before applying?+

It depends on the university. Some graduate schools, such as Acıbadem University, ask that a foreign diploma have its equivalence approved, while others request recognition documents at enrollment. The Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology notes that holders of foreign degrees apply to YÖK. Applicants with diplomas from outside Turkey should check each program’s document rules early.
