International students apply to Bahcesehir University master’s programs through BAU International’s online portal, choosing a program, uploading a passport, bachelor’s diploma and transcript, and waiting for an evaluation that BAU says takes up to one week. Approved applicants receive a Conditional Acceptance Letter, then an Official Acceptance Letter, and complete registration in person at the Beşiktaş South Campus in Istanbul.

The guide answers four practical questions: which master’s formats exist at Bahçeşehir University, who is eligible, how the application and registration steps run, and how language proficiency is checked. The sources are BAU International’s admissions pages accessed on 15 October 2026, the university’s graduate regulation, a Graduate School applicant guide, and national statistics from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
For context, YÖK’s Higher Education Statistics Bulletin of 27 March 2026 counts 330,464 master’s students across 208 higher education institutions in Türkiye for the 2025–2026 academic year. Intake dates and program availability change every semester and should be confirmed with BAU directly.

What master’s programs does BAU’s Graduate School offer?
Bahçeşehir University offers master’s programs with a thesis, without a thesis, and in online non-thesis formats, taught in English or Turkish. BAU International’s program finder listed 219 programs across all degree levels on 15 October 2026. Master’s fields range from Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Neuroscience to Clinical Psychology, Aviation Management and Executive MBA programs.
A graduate school is the academic unit within a Turkish university that runs graduate education and manages application and enrolment procedures. At BAU, that unit is the Graduate School. According to BAU’s published establishment decision, the Official Gazette of 9 May 2020 (issue 31122) recorded the closure of the university’s four former institutes: Educational Sciences, Natural Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Sciences. Some older pages, including BAU’s European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) Information Package description, still mention “four graduate institutes”, so applicants may meet both names.
Engineering and technology programs such as Computer Engineering, Big Data Analytics and Management, and Mechatronics Engineering are listed in English. Education programs, including Educational Technology and English Language Education, appear in both English and Turkish versions. Some law programs, such as Information Technology Law, are listed in Turkish only.
Online delivery is part of the range. On 15 October 2026, the finder labeled programs such as the English-taught MBA and English Language Education as online non-thesis options. The listed durations follow a pattern: thesis programs generally show two years, and non-thesis programs generally show 18 months.
Program availability changes by intake. BAU International’s Fall 2026 announcement states that applications are “subject to program availability for 2026-2027 intake”, so a program listed in the finder may close to new applicants during a given semester.
Who can apply to BAU as an international student?
Holders of a completed bachelor’s degree who are not Turkish citizens can generally apply to BAU master’s programs through BAU International. An international student is a person who is not a citizen of the Republic of Turkey and who is admitted to a higher education institution under international student status. BAU International evaluates each application against both country requirements and program requirements, according to its Master Applicants page accessed on 15 October 2026.
The Bahçeşehir University Graduate Education and Training Regulation, published in the Official Gazette on 2 March 2025 (issue 32829) and last amended on 14 May 2025, states in Article 10 that applicants to foreign-language master’s programs are assessed through central, international or university language exams. The minimum scores are set by the university Senate.
Table 1. Eligibility and language evidence for BAU master’s applicants by profile (BAU International, accessed 15 October 2026)
Applicant profile | Degree needed at application | Language evidence | When language is checked |
|---|---|---|---|
Applicant to an English-taught master’s | Bachelor’s diploma and transcript | Accepted exam result, if available | At application or at registration through the BAU Proficiency Exam |
Applicant to a Turkish-taught master’s | Bachelor’s diploma and transcript | B2-level Turkish proficiency | After enrollment in Istanbul, unless a valid certificate is held |
Citizen and bachelor’s graduate of one of seven listed English-speaking countries | Bachelor’s diploma and transcript | Exempt from English proof | Not required |
Graduate of a Turkish-taught bachelor’s at a recognized university | Bachelor’s diploma and transcript | Exempt from Turkish proof | Not required |
The seven exempt countries listed by BAU are Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Doctoral applicants follow a separate route described on BAU International’s PhD Applicants page.

How do you apply to a BAU master’s program?
You apply to a BAU master’s program online through BAU International’s application portal. You select the term and degree, verify your email, enter your passport number, rank your preferred programs and upload documents. BAU International’s How to Apply page, accessed on 15 October 2026, states that the evaluation takes up to one week.
Once you complete the online application form, your application will be evaluated maximum in a week.
— BAU International, How to Apply, accessed 15 October 2026
The portal sets two limits: one application per passport for each intake, and only one approved program from your ranked preferences. Placing your strongest-fit program first therefore matters more than listing many fields.
After evaluation, BAU International sends a Conditional Acceptance Letter by email with an online payment link. The applicant then pays a non-refundable advance tuition deposit by the deadline in that letter. Fees vary by program and academic year. Once the deposit is received, BAU issues an Official Acceptance Letter, an enrollment guide and the key dates for arrival.
BAU International’s Visa and Residence Permit page states that students who need a visa can apply for it with the Official Acceptance Letter. Visa rules depend on citizenship, and BAU points applicants to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye for country-specific requirements.
The BAU Graduate School’s Master’s Degree Application and Admission Process Guide adds one more stage for some programs. Depending on the program, applicants may face an interview or a written academic exam. Results are published on the university website and in UMIS, BAU’s student information system.

Log InWhat documents do BAU master’s applicants need?
BAU master’s applicants generally upload a passport, a bachelor’s diploma, a bachelor’s transcript and, where available, a language proficiency certificate. BAU International’s Master Applicants page, accessed on 15 October 2026, lists these four items. Some programs may also ask for a CV, statement of purpose, portfolio or recommendation letter, according to BAU International’s Fall 2026 announcement.
At registration in Istanbul, BAU International’s Registration Guide asks master’s students to bring the original bachelor’s diploma, the original transcript, one passport-size photograph and any language proficiency result. If the bachelor’s documents are in neither English nor Turkish, a translation is required.
The Graduate School’s applicant guide sets a further condition on transcripts: active student transcripts are not accepted, so the transcript must show a completed degree. The same undated guide also lists an ALES result for thesis programs. ALES is the centralised examination administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) and used in applications to graduate programs and in academic staff recruitment in Turkey. BAU International’s master’s applicant page does not list ALES among its documents, so international applicants should confirm with BAU whether their chosen thesis program asks for it.
Prepare the following before you open the portal:
Scan your passport photo page in a clear, readable format
Obtain your final bachelor’s transcript showing a completed degree
Scan your bachelor’s diploma or official graduation certificate
Arrange a translation if your documents are in neither English nor Turkish
Book an accepted language exam, or plan for the BAU Proficiency Exam
Check your program page for a CV, statement of purpose or portfolio request
Read your country’s page on BAU International’s Country Requirements index
BAU International’s Country Requirements index lists 147 countries, each with its own page. Your country’s page is where to confirm whether an apostille or other certification applies.
When are BAU graduate intakes and deadlines?
BAU admits master’s students twice a year, in Fall and Spring. For the 2026–2027 academic year, BAU International’s Fall 2026 announcement gives 21 September 2026 as the Graduate School’s Fall semester start and states that applications and registrations remain open until 30 November 2026, subject to program availability. The Spring 2027 semester begins on 18 January 2027.
A student who misses the Fall extension can plan for Spring, because BAU International’s How to Apply page confirms that graduate programs accept both Fall and Spring intakes. Undergraduate programs at BAU have only a Fall intake, so the Spring option is specific to graduate study.
Table 2. BAU graduate calendar dates published for 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 (BAU Graduate School and BAU International)
Calendar item | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|
2025–2026 Fall classes begin | 6 October 2025 | BAU Graduate School Academic Calendar 2025–2026 |
2025–2026 Spring classes begin | 2 March 2026 | BAU Graduate School Academic Calendar 2025–2026 |
2026–2027 Fall semester start | 21 September 2026 | BAU International, Fall 2026 announcement |
2026–2027 application and registration extension | Until 30 November 2026 | BAU International, Fall 2026 announcement |
2026–2027 Spring semester start | 18 January 2027 | BAU International, Fall 2026 announcement |
Dates move between academic years: the Fall start fell on 6 October 2025 in the 2025–2026 calendar and on 21 September 2026 in the 2026–2027 announcement.
The deposit deadline is set in each Conditional Acceptance Letter. The Fall 2026 extension applies only to programs that still have places, so a popular program can fill earlier.
6 semesters
Thesis master’s maximum lengthNormal length is four semesters, excluding scientific preparation (BAU Graduate Regulation, Article 12, Official Gazette 2 March 2025).
120 ECTS
Thesis master’s minimum workloadAt least seven courses, a seminar and a thesis, with at least 21 national credits (BAU Graduate Regulation, Article 11, 2025).
How do thesis, non-thesis and online formats differ?
A thesis master’s at BAU normally runs four semesters and ends with a thesis, while a non-thesis master’s runs two to three semesters and ends with a term project. The Bahçeşehir University Graduate Education and Training Regulation of 2 March 2025 sets these structures in Articles 11, 12, 16 and 17. The online programs shown in BAU International’s finder on 15 October 2026 were all non-thesis.
A master’s with thesis is a graduate program completed through coursework and the preparation of a thesis. Under Article 11 of the 2025 regulation, it includes at least seven courses, a seminar and a thesis, with at least 21 national credits and 120 ECTS. Article 12 sets a normal length of four semesters and a limit of six. The maximum period of study is the longest duration set out in regulation within which a graduate program must be completed before the right to enrolment ends.
A master’s without thesis is a coursework-focused graduate program completed with a term project instead of a thesis. Article 16 requires at least ten courses plus a project course, with at least 30 credits and 60 ECTS. Article 17 sets a length of two to three semesters.
The format suits different goals:
Thesis programs fit applicants aiming at a PhD or research career.
Non-thesis programs fit professionals seeking advanced coursework in a shorter period, such as the Executive MBA.
Online non-thesis programs fit applicants who need flexible delivery.
Turkish-taught programs fit applicants with B2-level Turkish, and widen the choice in law and education.
A scientific preparatory program is a set of completion courses that a student admitted to a graduate program from a different field must complete before beginning the main program. Article 36 of BAU’s 2025 regulation limits it to two semesters and 18 credits.

Can you apply to BAU without a language certificate?
Yes. BAU International states that a language certificate is not needed to submit a master’s application. Proficiency must still be shown before regular study begins, through an accepted exam result or the BAU Proficiency Exam taken after registration, according to BAU’s Language Proficiency page accessed on 15 October 2026.
The first point to check is which tests BAU accepts. For master’s English exemption, BAU International lists TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, ÖSYM’s YDS and e-YDS, YÖKDİL, e-TEP and the BAU Proficiency Exam. Several widely used tests are excluded by name:
IELTS, TOEFL Special Home Edition, PTE Academic Online and Duolingo test results are not acceptable proficiency scores at BAU.
— BAU International, Language Proficiency, accessed 15 October 2026
Validity periods also differ: TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and e-TEP results are valid for two years, YDS, e-YDS and YÖKDİL results for five years, and the BAU Proficiency Exam for three years. BAU International also notes that candidates who take these exams inside Turkey must choose test centers at Turkish public universities.
A second misunderstanding concerns graduates of English-medium universities. The Graduate School’s applicant guide states that a graduate of Bahçeşehir University or any other English-medium university is still required to submit a language certificate. The only English exemption listed by BAU International covers citizens of the seven named English-speaking countries who also completed their bachelor’s degree there.
BAU International states that a student without an accepted score may sit the BAU Proficiency Exam after registration, and that the exam can be taken only once. BAU International’s Registration Guide adds that the result determines exemption or placement in the preparatory program. For Turkish-taught programs, a student without a valid Central Turkish Proficiency Exam result from a YÖK-authorized institute sits BAU’s Turkish exam after enrolling in Istanbul.
What should you do after choosing a BAU program?
After choosing a BAU master’s program, confirm that it is open for your intake, prepare your documents, and plan your language evidence before the portal closes. BAU International’s Fall 2026 announcement gives 30 November 2026 as the extended deadline for programs with places, and the Spring 2027 intake offers a second window starting 18 January 2027.
The steps below follow BAU International’s admissions pages as of 15 October 2026:
Confirm the program’s language, format and availability for your intake in BAU International’s finder.
Check your country’s page on the Country Requirements index.
Submit one application, ranking your strongest-fit program first.
Answer document requests during the evaluation week.
Meet the deposit deadline in your Conditional Acceptance Letter.
Use the Official Acceptance Letter for a visa, if your citizenship requires one.
Register at the Beşiktaş South Campus, then visit the International Office for the residence permit.
A student residence permit is the residence permit granted to a foreign national studying in Turkey, allowing them to remain in the country for the duration of their studies. BAU International’s Visa and Residence Permit page states that the International Office assists with the application and submits the file to the Presidency of Migration Management, while the student remains responsible for applying on time. BAU advises students not to leave Turkey before collecting the residence permit card.
Applicants who need a visa can compare the semester start date with the visa appointment times in their own country before choosing an intake. Intake dates, program lists and document rules can change between semesters, so check BAU’s announcements again before each step.

Real-World Examples
The examples in this section are illustrative scenarios created to explain situations applicants may encounter.
Amina holds an IELTS result. Amina, a business graduate, plans to apply to an English-taught non-thesis master’s at BAU and holds a valid IELTS result. Reading BAU International’s Language Proficiency page, she sees that IELTS is not on the accepted list. She submits her application anyway, because a certificate is not needed to apply, and compares two options: booking a TOEFL iBT before arrival or sitting the BAU Proficiency Exam after registration. Knowing the BAU exam can be taken only once, she books the TOEFL iBT and keeps the BAU exam as a fallback.
Daniel misses the Fall window. Daniel finishes his engineering degree late in the year and finds that his preferred thesis program has no Fall 2026 places left. Instead of switching fields, he checks BAU International’s admissions pages and confirms that graduate programs also run a Spring intake. He prepares his final transcript and diploma, asks the program whether a CV or statement of purpose is needed, and plans his application for the Spring 2027 semester starting on 18 January 2027.
Leyla studied in Turkish. Leyla completed a Turkish-taught bachelor’s degree at a recognized university and wants a Turkish-taught master’s in education at BAU. BAU International lists graduates of Turkish-taught bachelor’s programs at recognized universities as exempt from the B2 Turkish requirement. She keeps a copy of her diploma and transcript showing the language of instruction, uploads both with her application, and asks the International Office to confirm her exemption in writing before registration. With the exemption confirmed, her first week in Istanbul can focus on course selection rather than a placement exam.
Marco studied in English. Marco graduated from an English-medium university in his home country and assumed his degree would count as proof of English. The Graduate School’s applicant guide states that English-medium graduates still submit a language certificate, and his country is not among the seven exempt countries. Marco submits his application without waiting, schedules a TOEFL iBT, and checks that its two-year validity will still cover his start date. He uploads the result to the portal once it arrives, and keeps the BAU Proficiency Exam in mind as a single-attempt backup after registration.

Browse UniversitiesFrequently Asked Questions
Does Bahcesehir University offer master’s programs in English?+
Yes. On 15 October 2026, BAU International’s program finder listed English-taught master’s programs in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Computer Engineering, Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology and Aviation Management. Many fields are offered in both thesis and non-thesis versions, and some appear in English and Turkish. Open programs vary by intake, so each program page should be checked.
Can I apply to BAU master’s programs without IELTS?+
Yes. BAU International states that IELTS results are not accepted as proficiency scores at BAU, and a language certificate is not needed to submit the application. Accepted options for master’s English exemption include TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, YDS, e-YDS, YÖKDİL, e-TEP and the BAU Proficiency Exam, as listed on BAU International’s Language Proficiency page accessed on 15 October 2026.
Do international students need ALES for a BAU master’s?+
The answer depends on the program. The Graduate School’s Master’s Degree Application and Admission Process Guide lists an ALES result for thesis programs, while BAU International’s Master Applicants page does not list ALES among its documents. Because the two sources differ in scope, international applicants to thesis programs should ask BAU International to confirm whether their chosen program requests ALES or an equivalent result.
When does BAU accept master’s applications for international students?+
BAU accepts graduate applications for Fall and Spring intakes. For the 2026–2027 academic year, BAU International’s Fall 2026 announcement states that applications and registrations remain open until 30 November 2026 for programs with places, and that the Spring 2027 semester begins on 18 January 2027. Dates differ between academic years and should be confirmed for each intake.
How many programs can I apply to at Bahçeşehir University?+
Through BAU International’s portal, each passport holder submits one application per intake and ranks preferred programs, but only one program can be approved. The Graduate School’s applicant guide mentions applying to up to three programs in its system. International applicants should follow the rules shown in BAU International’s portal and confirm any difference with the International Office.
Is there an online master’s at Bahcesehir University?+
Yes. On 15 October 2026, BAU International’s program finder labeled several non-thesis master’s programs as online, including an English-taught MBA and English Language Education, plus Turkish-taught programs such as Marketing and Human Resources Management. The online programs shown on that date were non-thesis. Availability and delivery format should be confirmed for each intake.
Do I need to speak Turkish to study a master’s at BAU?+
Only for Turkish-taught programs. BAU International requires B2-level Turkish proficiency from students who will study in Turkish. Students without a valid certificate from a YÖK-authorized institute take BAU’s Turkish exam after enrolling, and graduates of Turkish-taught bachelor’s programs at recognized universities are exempt. English-taught master’s programs require English proficiency instead.
What happens after BAU accepts my master’s application?+
BAU first sends a Conditional Acceptance Letter with a payment link for the non-refundable advance tuition deposit. After the deposit is received, BAU issues an Official Acceptance Letter, an enrollment guide and key dates. Students then apply for a visa where required, register in person at the Beşiktaş South Campus, and start the residence permit process through the International Office.
Does BAU help international master’s students with the residence permit?+
Yes. BAU International’s Visa and Residence Permit page states that the International Office assists with the student residence permit application and submits the file to the Presidency of Migration Management after registration. The student remains responsible for applying on time and is advised to visit the office right after enrollment.
Can I do a PhD at BAU without a master’s degree?+
BAU International’s PhD Applicants page, accessed on 15 October 2026, asks international doctoral applicants for both a bachelor’s and a master’s diploma and transcript, a letter of intent, and a GRE or GMAT result, followed by an online interview. Applicants holding only a bachelor’s degree should ask the Graduate School which routes, if any, apply to their field.
